Septoplasty is a corrective surgical procedure
done to straighten the nasal septum, the partition
between the two nasal cavities. Ideally, the septum
should run down the center of the nose. When it
deviates into one of the cavities, it narrows
that cavity and impedes airflow. Often the inferior
turbinate on the opposite side enlarges, which
is termed compensatory hypertrophy. Deviations
of the septum can lead to nasal obstruction. Most
surgeries are completed in 60 minutes or less,
not including recovery time.
The septum is the wall in the nose that separates
the two nasal passages and supports the overall
nasal structure. Patients who suffer from a deviated
septum can experience a number of serious health
concerns. Due to genetics or injury, the septum
may become bent or broken, causing asymmetry between
the nasal passages. As a result, patients may
experience chronic sinusitis, inflammation, bleeding,
headaches, sleep apnea and/or snoring. In these
instances, patients are often good candidates
for septoplasty — a surgical procedure that
corrects the flaws in the septum.
Septoplasty Procedure
The procedure usually involves a judicious excision/
realignment of a portion of the bone and/or cartilage
in the nasal cavity. Under general or local anesthesia,
the surgeon works through the nostrils, making
an incision in the lining of the septum to reach
the cartilage targeted in the operation. Sufficient
cartilage is preserved for structural support.
After the septum is straightened, it may then
be stabilized temporarily with small plastic tubes,
splints, or sutures internally.
During septoplasty, Dr. Tavoussi creates small
incisions in the nostrils through which he extracts
or straightens the bent cartilage of the deviated
septum. Dr. Tavoussi may also insert small splints
or sutures to stabilize septum growth. In addition,
he may suggest using saline nasal sprays to facilitate
a healthy recovery.
Cost of Septoplasty Surgery
The cost of Septoplasty
Surgery varies from patient to patient and
it depends on many factors. Septoplasty may be
performed by different techniques, by Septoplasty
surgeons of different experience and skill levels.
Once you have had a Septoplasty consultation you
can get an estimate of the cost of Septoplasty
for you.
Like most types of plastic
surgery, Septoplasty surgery involves surgery
related and facility fees. Usually additionally
to the cost of your Septoplasty you will need
to find out the cost of anesthesia or anesthesiologist
fee; the cost of the facility or operating room
and any other cost associated with your Septoplasty
surgery such as:
medication, blood work, or any other procedure
related cost.
Septoplasty and breathing problems are covered
by most of the PPO Insurances
and there are several cosmetic surgery financing
options available to cover the cost of the
procedure. It is always best to speak directly
with your plastic surgeon’s office staff
